Surrounded by mountains, Lácar lake and the picturesque city of San Martín de los Andes, La Pastera Museum of the “Che” offers a different perspective to learn about the life and thought of this mythical character. The museum building is a collector’s item in itself, as it dates back to 1946. Fully built of wood, La Pastera owes its name to its original purpose, to store the fodder for the animals used by the Park rangers.

This shed –recycled with modern parameters of museology and architecture– is part of Lanín National Park. From the very entrance you can appreciate the aesthetic will to preserve the spirit of mid-last century, with a gas pump similar to the one in La Pastera when Ernesto Guevara and Alberto Granado chose that place to spend the night.

In the main room, dynamic information panels recreate the life of the revolutionary leader with a nimble biography accompanied by unpublished photographs. The thematic panels that complete the exhibit bring us close to the “Che”’s vision of workers, youth, his concept of the new man, Fidel Castro, family... Warm and precise, the texts immerse the visitor in the exciting history of his life.

The route, which includes an homage to those missing during the military dictatorship, ends on a mezzanine floor where the visitor can see hay bales, recreating the place where Guevara and Granado slept in the summer of 1952.

Another way to navigate the life of the “Che” is through multimedia, created by the Association of Government Workers (ATE). Among writings, videos, music and photos, one institutional audiovisual presentation is outstanding. It shows, beyond the history of the Museum, images of the inauguration ceremony on June 20, 2008, attended by Aleida Guevara March, one of the “Che”’s daughters.

Another information piece is a plasma screen on which audiovisuals are constantly reproduced about the life of the “Che”, his speeches and interviews.

The library section offers some collector’s items: materials, publications, photos and books edited by the Che Guevara Studies Center in Havana, Cuba.

La Pastera has a heating system and services that guarantee the enjoyment of a pleasant visit; it also has an amphitheater for the open-air activities organized in the spring and summer.

La Pastera, Museum of the “Che” is not just one museum more. It is a refuge for history, analysis and reflexion about one of the most emblematic characters in history.
